Lopsided cutters on new chain

Yes, I have a little Echo CS-352ES, the chain it came with is an Oregon and I worked out it must be a VXL. So I ordered a direct replacement.

I know when you start talking about 0.2 mm it sounds petty but the chain is only a slim one and the width of the cutters from one side to the other varies by about 15%. This didn't seem right, hence the question.

I know I could just use it but if Oregon chains aren't out by this much something isn't right so I'll contact the seller.

Can someone recommend a good place to buy chains, it's a 53 drive link chain so slightly harder to find than the more common 52s.

Try Chainsaw bars by Rob D they are very good

Only just found this thread again I thought it had been deleted so now following up.

We supplied this chain via Amazon , we are an Oregon dealer and make our chains from 100ft rolls the boxes are then hand written with chain data.

This issue was sorted within 48hrs , I liaised with my Oregon rep throughout ,

the chain in question went back to Oregon in Gloucester and then on to the USA for analysis .

We checked random samples of various Oregon , Stihl & Gopart chains , dimensions do vary and all are similar to the customers findings .

So to summarise the tolerances quoted initially Would appear to be standard within the saw chain industry .

Some cutters are slightly longer than others but this makes little difference as all the cutting faces are evenly spaced , as with any mass produced stamped metal component the production tolerance will be fairly large just due to the nature of the product .

That's not quite right. I discussed the issue with Oregon and it turns out a couple of the cutters were outside the tolerances they could come up with. On closer inspection I noticed the chain was made from two sections, i.e. it had two joins. One section all the cutters were even to the naked eye and the other section they were not.

I think there may have been some sort of problem at the end of the chain roll but don't doubt now it was original Oregon chain (I wasn't aware chains are often made to order and boxes hand written when I posted). I will also add that I received two replacement chains from Neil so am happy with their service and both those chains looked perfect to me.

I posted the chain back to Oregon but have not heard anything since. I did take a number of photos but didn't think it was worth posting them up.

ADW you are entitled to your opinion but the truth will be revealed if you care to get out your digital calliper and measure some new chains straight out of the box !.

We sell thousands of feet of saw chain every year without issue , Oregon rep been with them for 15 years & in the industry much longer and never seen an issue with that product, that's why Oregon in the states wanted in back , hopefully I may hear their response , if I do I will post it for all to see .

As someone else pointed out previously once the chain is in use and has hit hard objects etc and been hand filed any small tolerances will be irrelevant
