A lot can be said for reputation I reckon. If you are a reputable company chances are people will sway your way.

 

As for the quoting like many have said don't run before you can walk, work for a company (even a few) see how they do things. If you go out and decide to do your own quotes without any experience you will no doubt loose out either putting in a low quote and then realise you have bitten off more than you can chew or go I to high and never get a job. The whole quoting thing is how long is a piece of string.

Best advice would be to work with a few groups and get a feel for the industry and how things are done.

I've been in the game 7 years and still get the odd quote wrong (usually with those dam conifers). By the time you can get every quote spot on you will be ready for that comfy armchair and the newspaper crosswords in the retirement home.

I am still at college doing forestry and arb but I would just like to find out how people price up jobs, I eventually want to go self employed and also just interested what has to be considered in pricing! Thanks!!

 

I'm guessing you're young so you'll have no credibility. Quote what you think when you go SE. You'll soon find out if you're right or not. I'd doubt anyone on here will help you and to be honest why should they as i dare say they'll have had to learn the hard way.

Do hedge cutting as well, you've got more chance of making some money and then start to tackle medium/ big trees. It's not too difficult to cut down a healthy tree if it's not over a property or near the road, but good pruning work on medium and big trees takes years to learn.

I don't sell a job, I give a customer advice so they can make an informed decision.

I know it is a big ask as I get the impression it's what you can afford to charge sort of thing, I just had this thought about what people in the industry think! I respect you all that say get experience for a few years it's defiantly the way! College is good but it doesn't give you experience! Thanks all for your time! Looking fawards to getting in to it!!

Yeah I have got a few people I do gardens for I know it's not arb and some will look at it funny but it's getting my foot in the door! And possible clients for the future

Suppose it has too many factors to base it on like how many workers and all that! Yeah it was probably a daft thread to post but hey now I know that it's not something that can be told really!!

My advice is to work in the industry for 8yrs then you won't need to ask these questions because you'll know it yourself.

I don't mean to sound facetious so I'm apologise that it sounds that way.

 

No it's alright it's all advise! But yeah my plan is to work for some people for a bit anyway I couldn't jump in to it that fast! College only teach you so much!

If there was a sure-fire formula all quotes would be the same.

 

No intention to sound negative, you will find loads of threads on here which suggest anything from time X Hourly rate to 'experience is everything'.

 

If you are still at college and you 'eventually' want to go SE then just watch and learn from others over the years. Then, grasshopper, it will be time for you to leave the temple.

 

(If you are not an old git like me you'll have to google that last quote).
