I have some 1mtr + diameter x 2mtr long Beech Butts max, in my yard, that have been there for approx 2yrs. If we split the trunks down in to billets now,Nov, will they dry out much by next Feb,as long as I cover the top of the stacks of billets. Would split the billets quit small to aid drying. Any replies much appreciated.

Yes they will dry a lot in the winter months. Sure it's not warm but winter tends to be the windy season and this helps no end. If you stack them in alternating directions it will also help airflow. Beech left in the round tends to rot out.

Jon,The Beech trees had been down 12/18ths or so before I moved them, but as you know only small diameter branches dry out much, especially as these had been shaded by standing trees.

As said before I find some of the spelted trunk just shatter to nothing!! I am sure you have the same problem.

Before and after pics of some billets we broke down this summer end of july onwards, plan is to log them in the spring. we will just run some polythene over the top. already mc measuring as low as 18% on some of the birch and beech oak around 26%
