is there any lump that you've not turned into firewood?

No I have and do dabbled in bits of timber but I learned early on that it has to be volume or speciality. I have some nice Taxus put aside but if the man its promised to doesn't pick it up soon it wont see the other side of yule tide.

What you need to bear in mind is that tree surgery mainly makes its money out of tree removals, often defective trees in locations with bad access, its not a natural hunting ground for craftwood materials. As an example, one guy wanted a price to fell a small walnut, small, badly decayed and nail ridden he had been told by a mate down the pub that all walnuts were "worth a grand because Purdey use then to make guns" he wanted me to buy it.

Tree surgeons do turn up the odd bit of useable timber from time to time but the associated costs make it barely worth doing. You make more money sticking to what you know.

What effect does canker have on the wood that makes it desirable when milled? Is it similar to a ripple from buckling, or like burr wood?

It's not as nice as burred or spalted ash.ImageUploadedByArbtalk1446741931.619006.jpg.48d0ad1cbf851b017bebda92a6f47b4a.jpg

This is only small piece I have I was going to turn ...but basically it's just character as you can see it's not as interesting as the spalted or burred stuff but ash is great predicable wood to work with and would look interesting if you like that sort of thing ImageUploadedByArbtalk1446742122.134871.jpg.ea1eeba7351c51842b567ced9d77ac19.jpg

Don't go thinking it's worth loads like burrs.
