Almost certainly one of the root shoulders will go under the fence for starters and there will be a tap root as well. If I had to take it out by hand I'd use a mattock and a jack.

Bite the bullet and get a stump grinder in. If it was a conifer then perhaps I'd have a go by hand but not a cherry right next to a fence/conservatory.

Yep. and you can bet there'd be one under that fence if you're digging it out.

Almost certainly one of the root shoulders will go under the fence .

The OP said

The good news is that seems to be a void under the stump towards the fence so it should be possible to avoid it

I am going to guess/hope the fencer took care of that a while back:thumbup1:

Has Op says there is a Conservatory immediately behind fence then with a bit of luck the roots will have been severed if a decent/legitimate footing dug .

Conservatory's bases can be unpredictable!

You dig stumps out like that for £60 ? You must be mad, there are far easier ways to make 60 quid and as for being rotten in 6 months I have ground many 3 year old cherry stumps that is like bell metal!

Defo agreed.

"Bell metal" hahaha love it.

The OP didn't say what he p[lans to do there.

If he just wants it deep enough to turf over, or just below ground level.

I wouldn't dream of trying to dig it out, and with a narrow access I'd be towards 3 figures.
