I use my mates when he's loading, really nice cutting height.

I normally just fire into my stack at head height!

I could use one at the right money, though, but the transport might kill it.

Richard, you can buy a cheapo one for £50 delivered, which isn't much more than a 16" bar and chain would set you back.

Spud knows his stuff.

A 170 on a 16" would be like watching intercontinental drift.

I was pointing out that stihl specify 16inch can be used with that saw. I totally agree it would be slow but that's what they say. Perhaps you should get them to change their handbook.

Not all of stihls customers are buying saws for production, some just want to hold 16" in there hands without paying too much for it.

Wasn't a pop mate, you only pointed out what German technical geniuses have stated.

Us production lads are obsessed with speed, maybe we forget that it's not such a consideration for less commercial endeavours.

I borrowed one of those log holders, and found it to low, so I knocked me own up so its a decent hight and good on the old back.

seriously, i have had 3 ms170's 14'' is whack if you bury it, 16'' is a joke, 12" is barely exceptable, but better IMO

 

The PMMC3 chain with 1,1 mm gauge is much thiner than the 1,3 mm chain, and so is the cut, much narrower. The chainsaw needs less power to operate it, so maybe it is good such a 16” bar on MS 170.

And if you have the long bar maybe you not use its all length all the time, but in some situations may be useful. Just my opinion.
