Unloaded and loaded line speeds are very different.A ramsey/milemarker/Superwinch (hydraulic) dragging a two ton landy up a muddy hill will probably be a similar speed to a Warn 8274, however unloaded the 8274 will pull the rope back in much faster.

I believe the recommendation with milemarkers is a PTO hydraulic pump, which drives the motor in the winch (expensive but the best option).

Put the transfer box in neutral, pick a gear to suit the line speed you want. They are supposed to be very fast and reliable. This what the man from milemarker told me.

my mile marker is far from slow running offthe pto, however the build quality is poor and the winch really isn't the best to use day in day out! The man from MM will tell you anything you want to hear if he thinks you will buy one.

A warn 8274 is not a winch for serious arb work.

Just received this e-mail........

Hi David,

The supplier believes that the Ramsey RPH 42.2 unit would be too large and

powerful for the base vehicle. Instead they have suggested a smaller winch

that they have had installed on previous occasions. For reference I have

attached the spec sheet for the suggested alternative winch and a picture

to illustrate the completed conversion.

Kind Regards

They're now suggesting the Ramsey HD-P 34.9 as an alternative.

There's obviously a fair bit of weight difference between the two units, but wondered if anyone had any thoughts on what has been said in the e-mail?

Thanks

D

Going with Ramsey Tom.

Just need to get my head around weight issue.

47Kg with rope for the HD-P 34.9

where as the RPH 42.2 is about 76 Kgs with rope

Will this have a detrimental effect on front weight steering etc.....

& would the 34.9 be any use for vehicle recovery & small/medium type fells & trunk pulling?

As stated before, our 9t Igland/Valtra combo would deal with anything bigger.

Cheers

Power steering will take care of the weight issue, it will wear the suspension a bit more but that’s simply a maintenance issue.

I would go with the smaller winch, if it won’t pull use a snatch block, if that won’t do it bring on the tractor

I would have thought a 3.5 tonne rated winch would get you out of most things, and pull over the kind of trees you want to.

Snatch block would double that up to 7 tonne, so not to shoddy.

I wonder if they are concerned about putting a powerful winch on and damaging the vehicle. If you had the bigger winch, 4.3 tonne pull, doubled up on a snatch block, 8.6 tonnes, you could probably do some damage to the chassis?

The main thing to remember about winching off a small vehicle is to anchor the back of the vehicle to something first, otherwise the winch will just pull the vehicle along. Probably right under where you want to drop the tree.....
