from time to time I come back and there is puddle of oil where the stihl saws are stored (get irregular (monthly summer ... fortnightly winter) use from me )

 

Could this be dripping out the bottom with the saws in it normal resting point ?

 

Or would it be better to leave them on their side (blade flat on the floor) with the tanks uppermost ?

More likely dripping from the sprocket cover, so store them recoil side down. Or just empty the oil tanks.

Wouldn't make a difference, if anything would be worse as that's the direction the oil is going from the tank to the chain

Had this problem on one of my saws eventually found out it was caused

by the oil leaking out from the tank relief/one way valve when sitting in the

upright position, tried clearing with compressed air as per workshop manual but no joy.

So put in new valve, problem fixed.

wires crossed sorry, i thought you were talking about joe newton's reply which was directly above yours and mentioned recoil side down.:thumbup:
