Get yourself a beer and worry again on tuesday:beer:

Sounds like you made it safe with temp bracing and reduction of weight/sail. No one can have a go at you for that!

removed a lot of weight/ spread seams to have temp releived the iminent splitting but not to much weight spread at top hopeing to retain some kind of crowm i supose.

but i think the buggers got to come down. what do you think ?

Your call but in my mind given where it is and what's happened the tree should come down...

And I must admit I wouldn't have hesitated given where the crack is...

Get it down and plant a new one... And rather than ring up the main stem get some planks out of it. Blue cedar is a lovely stable attractive looking timber... and very resistant to decay.

there may be some one more option and that is reduction of weight and several rod braces ! some may condem me for saying this but it is still an approved method . obviosly this is only possiblke in some cases but betwene rod bracing , weight reduction and a 4 ton cobra system or simikar you may well get another 2-3 years out of the tree but i would inspect the tree every 6-8 months .

Is it worth spending all that money though if you are only getting 2-3 more years out of the trees life...and then have to spend even more money taking it down?

IMO it would be a lot better to fell and replant.

yeah i do agree but from the L/A's TO's point of view then i can imagine they would be more interested in retaining the tree taking into consideration its location and potential amenity value . but personally i think i would fell it and re plant with anothere blue atlantic
