How big are the stumps ?

If they aint big you could try this, I've done it loads of times.

Dig a small trench all the way around the stump being careful not to disturb the bark. Then take the bark off with a penknife without getting any soil on the wood. Your now ready to sink the saw in ten inches below ground level without ruining the chain. It's really easy to do except on shallow rooted conifers.

For connies I dig around to expose the big roots, axe em through, then so long as you have an anchor point and have left them tall they pop out with a Tirfor.

Lol you can probably tell I dont have a grinder. Anything too big I sub out.

I pay £35 +VAT for a pedestrian grinder per day, try some of your more local hire shops as £80 is bloody expensive.

To be fair, its supply and demand economics, we have a high concentration of tree surgeons in the immediate area, and very few hirers of such kit. I dont think the normal tool hire shops have grinders around here, so the chipper hire shop has the market.

If they are not too big dig them out, trench all the way round cutting any big roots, hook the tirfor on a root at the back as low as you can this will pull it out.

to be fair though, the time that will take you will work out the same price as a grinder hire!! but i do agree it makes alot less mess than a grinder.
