Hedgehogs nesting!?!

For a while I have had a hedgehog family in the garden - probably 6 years now, and they have just started dragging leaves etc across the garden to their hole I made under some decking. I know that the summer has been off an on but is this a little early? Is it a sign of a bad winter?

Yer hedgehogs are nice to see, we have a few plodding around the place, day and night. The trouble is I have a patterdale who loves finding rats to play with but teaching her the difference in rats and hedgehogs is hard, the adults curl up so there ok but the young don't seem to know danger and unfortunately a few get killed. I try saving what I can as I like them.

I've figured if you prod the little ones and roll them About a bit they soon realise danger and can then escape the dog

As for the weather it wouldn't surprise me if were in for a bad winter because we've not had much of a summer and were had a few fairly mild winters on the trot

Have you had problems with fleas from the hedgehogs if your dog is in contact with them. I would happily give a place to a couple in my own garden if fleas or worms arent going to becaome a constant issue. Never see them round here

Like most fleas they are host specific, so whilst you or the dog may suffer for a day or two, they cannot breed.
