Foraging firewood

I've moved to a small village into a cottage with a wood burner so I'm looking for few wood 😄

I've been walking some of the local woods and copses and see lots of bits of cut trees. Nothing massive, just the odd trunk or couple of limbs. The biggest one seen has been about 6-8" across and 6 feet long.

Can I collect this and take it home for cutting up into fire wood? It looks like it's been chopped and left.

Stoatally - there is also the issue that the cast about bits of wood may intentionally have been left there as part of good forest management in order to increase habitat for invertebrates/decomposers etc at the bottom of the food chain. The intention here is to increase their population so higher order animals will have a food source.

In terms of law, yes taking the wood would be stealing (or more correctly 'theft by finding') as others have said, as the wood is private property just like a mobile phone for instance.

One thing others haven't mentioned is - well done for coming on to the forum and asking what the correct state of play is, rather then just taking it.

Makes you a rather honest chap in my opinion.
