The new Petzl Altios helmet which i kindly had sent to me last week by Yvonne at clark engineering.

The first thing you notice is just how nice looking the Altios is!!! The Altios is also incredibly light weighing in at only 335g!...I had to keep checking to see if id actually got it on!!

The next thing is how comfortable the Altios is,the mesh netting that your head sits in makes it a very comfortale helmet and also creates a good space above your head for air to circulate keeping you nice and cool.

Its very easy to adjust just like previous Petzl helmets.

Ive been wearing the Altios all last week in very hot conditions and it kept my head lovely and cool. Its also very nice not to have to wear ear defenders.

All in all a very comfy and light weight helmet that id highly recommend to any climber:thumbup:

Hers's a few pics of it in action

That does look remarkably comfy mate, Looks pretty cool too, How do ear plugs compare with muffs when it comes to protecting your ears?? Ive never worn them you see!!

Surprisingly good mate! I was a bit weary myself at first but they work really well. Just make sure you've put them in right though.

It feels great to have the wind blowin round your ears why your usin a saw up the tree:thumbup1:

Probably not to great if chipping for a long period of time though?

Cheers old snake! Glad to hear the Altios 'trial' was a big success and thanks for the feedback. We've had similar positive reports from other happy wearers too. Generally it's the weightless feeling and coolness of the design that's very appealing. Detailed pics of the helmet and other colour options can be seen on our website: here! :sneaky2:

A lot of ear plugs give a higher protection than standard muffs, I tried the atlios on at the trade fair, a very nice comfy helmet, would of bought one had my colleague not got the Kask and found it to small for him.

Will probably get one eventually.

Looks a nice helmet, especially for the summer,do you loose your ear plugs alot?

Not as yet mate, you do have to make sure that there in nice and tight though! I was thinking about getting a pair made especially for my ears, but not talked to anyone who's actually used them and its alot of money to spend if they only last 2 minutes!

I bought some custom ear plugs mainly for shooting but they do work well against chipper and saw noise. Bought from the people at EMTEC NOISEBREAKER CUSTOM MADE EARPLUGS at the CLA game fair this year they cost £75. They are the type where you can hear normal conversation but not loud noises.

The reasons I went for these over others for sale at the show were price - some were retailing at over £400 a pair and the way they moderate the sound. Some have an electronic unit within the earplug (expensive), some have a valve which only works on loud bangs (the sound wave shuts the valve), these have a tiny funnel in and work on the theory that loud noises are a bigger sound wave, these big waves won't fit through the tiny funnel so don't reach your ear drum.

I have been wearing them for shooting for a few weeks now and am really pleased with their performance, I haven't worn them much for working but have trialed them with the saws and chipper and the effect is quite strange. Instead of muffling the sound like defenders do they just seem to turn the volume down to an acceptable level. If someone talks to you when you are stood next to the chipper you can hear them clearly.

Comfort wise after a few minutes it is as if they are not there.

Hope that helps

Kev

Marc, you can try mine on the 19th.

Concerning earplugs:crying: I spent two months with a weeping and blocked ear and many trips to my GP until finally they held their hands up and sent me along to an ENT specialist. I had micro suction and swabs and it turned out to be a bacterial and fungus infection. The thing is though that the drops for the bacterial infection make space for the fungus and vice versa, so I spent one week stone cold deaf with the daddy of all creams blocking my ear canal, more micro suction (it felt bloody wierd when he was sucking the fungus of my ear drum), more drops, and finally....I can hear again!

...and all because of dirty ear plugs. Take care!:001_tongue:
