Wild guess, but the outriggers arent fully extended as they were working in a narrow lane.

The guy in the bucket tried to lift a cut section off with his hands to throw down and as the boom was already stretched to the max the extra weight of the section of timber caused the Spider lift to reach tipping point and tip over it did!!

Failing that, they tried to use it as a mini crane.

Whats the difference to using a platform as a crane and lifting a piece of and chucking it? Surley wether you've roped it on or are holding piece in your hands whilst in the basket, the weight is the same.

Only difference I can think of, is it would be easier to rig a heavier piece than you could lift.

One of the reasons I NEVER use them!

I felt the same as you untill this month, I can honestly its a bloody handy bit of kit.

On Ivy clad removals, you can go in with the platform remove the Ivy, then you have a nice easy climb, great!

This is a general thought for all not just yourself SkyHuck, as each to our own etc........

Experience + Training on setting up, positioning, wind speed awareness, rigging/dismantling and maintenance are all obvioulsy critical when using a MEWP.

With the above in place though, this should be sufficient to alay fears of machines toppling during arboricultural operations.

NEVER EVER USE ONE AS A CRANE !
