I've got the timbermaster from protimeter - cost just under £100, good range of settings for different species. Very accurate, with hammer probes for hard timber.

Measurements on a dry basis?

Got a Stihl one which agrees with my Silverline one so I think it's pretty good. Unless they are both well out.

Why shouldn't they agree, they are both measuring the same ting, electrical resistance?

 

The thing that is debatable is whether resistance bears a good correlation with moisture content across the range of calibration.

I've got one of the stihl type moisture meters but rebranded and looks exactly the same, and found that if you leave it in cupboard, turned off with brand new batteries in they still went flat and it was no use. The batteries i bought were duracell and in date, so I blamed the meter and bought a different brand that takes 9v battery and has auto power off in case you leave it on. I could turn it on now after a year and it would still work. Ok, so I don't know how accurate it is, but at least it turns on when i want it to and it seems to give realistic results, although I cant compare with another meter.

Another thumbs up for Protimeter. Ours is 20 years old and still consistant

Just had a look and mine is a Brennenstuhl 1298680, although I paid double what you can get it for now.
