Instructor / Technician – Arboriculture & Forestry

 

Sparsholt College Hampshire

 

Salary: £16,528 - £20,290

 

This is an exciting opportunity to work with our team in the training of arboriculture and forestry students. We have a strong dedication to industry and aim to produce students that are fit for purpose. We have extensive industrial worksites and are well resourced. Responsible for equipment checks, stores and the delivery of practical training to various levels of courses this is diverse and interesting role within the Arboriculture and Forestry Section.

 

 

The successful candidate will have a minimum of a Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject, strong practical skills and experience in Arboriculture and Forestry, together with excellent communication skills. A flexible approach and a passion for training is also paramount. NPTC certificates in Climbing and aerial rescue use of chainsaw in the canopy and felling up to medium trees is required.

You want all that for 16-20k i can think of easier and better jobs for that money, so much for dedication to the industry.

OK, so don't apply for it then!!

 

This job is about more than pounds and pence, a lot of guys get support to become NPTC assessors / LOLER inspectors / Qualified Teachers etc etc and there may be the possibilty to progress on to become a lecturer.

 

Don't get me wrong, not everyone would be able to afford to work and live for the money being advertised but for those who can... there's more besides.

Not having a go but I think its really sad that the salary should be so low for that type of position. £16528 divided by 261 working days = £63.32 a day: a groundies wage There appears to be little inceintive to better oneself in this business. Maybe thats why so many go it alone.

The last Technician Instructor we had came with 8 or 9 years experience but we have had guys with only one or two years under their belts. Experince combined with the right mental attitude is key.

 

A level 3 qualification can be achieved in a year (AA Tech Cert), good candidates may be able to get away without a level 3 but should be willing to work towards one.

I know what you mean but previous Instructor / Technicians have gone on to some really good things, largely as a result of the knowledge, skills and qualifications they've acquired and the contacts they have been able to make whilst working for the college. Other benefits outweigh the low salary for most guys.
