Advice for planting???

I've got a job coming up to remove some hawthorn trees for a client who's building a house, what would be a good species to replant to create some privacy, not be high maintenance and not have prolific roots that cause problems later on???

some will be planted about 8ft from where the house will be built, he is putting up a 6ft fence all the way along too, so it doesn't have to be trees that go in, just something that will create some added privacy???

Cheers

Extra Heavy Standard Ligustrum lucidum + Elaeagnus angustifolia Caspica + Magnolia grandiflora from Barcham Trees

They're all compact trees that provide evergreen screening above the fence height. The Elaeagnus and Ligustrum are cheaper than the Mags, you can plant them about 3m apart to make a good screen.

I'd go for hazel too. There's a variety called Corylus avellana "Contorta" which is much more slowly growing but has all the ecological benefits of normal, native hazel. I'd try to reccomend a nice mix of native shrubs, something that's going to provide cover for birds and food for insects etc.

what is the likley maintence input from your customer

lots of good species but if you plant a calcifuge in an acid area it will never make a good tree
