Wood block were used for road surfaces, laid end grain up, like wooden cobbles.

 

I spoke to some one who had burnt some one an open fire, because of the tar they burn well but embedded stones exploded.

 

I have seen small areas of road, constructed like that.

No modern context shot here, but I came across this great image earlier of street hawkers selling wood,

taking advantage of a coal porters strike in 1914

 

Life sure looked tough.

I remember my dad telling me that and of them being taken up when he was a small child which would have been during the Great War.
