Pole Lathe bowl Turning thread anyone??

So i'm new here (been lurking for some time) and i just decided to upload some of my bowls that i turn on my pole lathe.... Does anybody else do bowl turning on a pole lathe? Pictures of your bowls please?

don't know if there are any other pole lathe turners out there so this may be a lonely thread for you but i would be fascinated to see what you are able to do on a pole lathe. i'm afraid i went modern and got myself one of these electric things (a jet 3520B to be precise) but have always admire the skill of the pole turner.

 

can't wait to see more.

Cheers Steve, i have to admit i've never used an electric lathe before, kinda scarred to try in case i discover i like it more than a pole lathe lol (pole lathe turning being more of a unique skill). I'll be sure to upload more photos in future!

yup, i do a lot of pole lathe work, far more than powered lathe stuff. have done for about 2.5 years now

not got any photos handy but will try to take some of my bowls before they get sold

i like the pole lathe, its a far more relaxed way of working (and less scary than the powered lathe!) but there are limits on how big a bowl i can turn. after a certain size the momentum of the bowl overcomes teh friction of the power cord or it ssimply gets too dam heavy to turn comfortably

Hi Dave, do you prefer to work with any specific type of wood or do u just use whatever is lying around in the garden like me? lol. I've been turning for about a year now, i only make small and medium sized bowls though. I've tried to turn large bowls in the past but i struggle to actually get the damn thing on the lathe and spinning straight, often the size of the bowl and the momentum that it creates makes it a right nightmare to turn. Anyways i would love to see some pictures of some of the bowls you've turned!

Mainly Ash. some beach and cherry when i can get it. the greener the better i always say. if im getting a spray of sap in my face as i turn, its green enough

a few bowls turned on a pole lathe. I kinda like mine smooth so i do spend a bit of time sanding (on he pole lathe) and then i burnish with wood shavings
