This could be a bit of a marathon so I'll add a "thought for the day" and then summarise at the end.

 

1) Rudolf Diesel was not concerned with sparkless ignition, but pure adiabatic compression as a thermodynamic principle. Akroyd Stuart was the man behind thermal fuel ignition and the oil engine. Rudolf intended his engine to run on peanut oil as he hoped his invention would help smaller business' compete. So it was biodiesel in the first place. Here endeth the first lesson; thanks be to God.

Thanks teacher!... that's a great intro.

I already knew about Rudolf Diesel but not Akroyd Stewart.

I've also read that biodiesel (or true biofuel) results in less harmful emissions and also a higher performance..... so it'll be interesting to find out if that's part of the problem? (at a guess).

Intresting what you are saying.

I took My 1996 landy 90 for its mot the emissions test read .82 which the tester could not believe so redid it and got the same reading when I asked why he was baffled by the reading he said all the newer cars he had tested that week had higher readings so how can one engine be judge against a nother.

 

On a diesel it is only a smoke test no an immitions test. Very different and a diesel would have to be near on knackered to fail it.

Im yet to be educated on all this, but heres my ignorant theory.

 

Modern diesels with egrs, if the egr system is faulty or the vehicle is doing short runs, this can cause the engine to foul up. Happened my landcruiser. Resulted in lots of smoke and engine with a chest infection (stick with me here).

 

I blanked off the egr having looked at it, and its a simple job on the landcruiser (just at the side of the block). Within mins, the engine started to run smoother, and with less emmisions and smoke.

 

Now Im not saying we should all be blanking off these egr units; but when they are faulty, they can cause more harm than a vehicle without one.

 

I dont know if petrol is any better?

 

Personally, I think we should be using hybrids, and that might be utilsing a diesel engine? But a hydrogen unit would be ideal- if we could make hydrogen?

 

Or go back to gasification? Be handy for our business??
