Of course the top 1% pay nearly a third of all tax! They are the mega rich that are earning millions and millions every year, therefor pay a massive amount of tax.:001_rolleyes:

The hard facts are.. If your in the top 10% of earners you'll pay about 35% of your income in tax, if your in the bottom 10% of earners you pay about 43% of your income in tax, how's that fair?

Where have you got the figures from?

Why is it not fair???

Should the wealthy be charged more for goods and services, just because they have more??:confused1:

They often use less public services than the less well off, as they often have private health care, privately educate their children, etc.

IMO they pay more than their fair share, to expect them to pay the same percentage as those on much lower earnings is ridiculous IMO.

Of course the poorest pay more when you take into account other taxes like council tax and VAT. But IMO the income tax system is fair, Like huck says you can't make a rich man pay £2 for a mars bar just because he's rich. As far as council tax goes I'd rather have a local income tax, which would be fairer, and it would show up the high spending labour councils more too. Its the only decent idea the lib deems ever had.

Interesting Eggs, thanks for that :thumbup1:

I'm with you, we need a progressive, fair tax system in the UK that doesn't penalise the poor. Anyone that doesn't believe that rising inequality is an issue should take a look at Thomas Piketty's recent book 'Capital' - Enlightening.

The thing about this inequality thing is that the super rich skew the figures, they are set apart from the rest of us and the left never stop banging on about them, but their numbers are tiny. The real figures should be comparing a lawyer to a builder for example or a dentist to a tree surgeon, and on those figures I would say that equality is about the same as before.

Private health care and private schools shouldn't exist. We should all be in it together and a meritocratic system should allow talent, skill and ability to prevail.

It not just the poor that will get a stuffing.
