Ive found bottle jacks work pretty well the only thing i dont like about them is they are not wide enough at the top for softer woods like popular and willow and can just sink through the wood instead of pushing it........never found that to be a real problem and they have saved the day on many ocaisions but can be very a bit unnerving when you think you are gonna run out of jack and the trees not moving yet!

I have a couple of these. Must dig them out, not seen them in a while. Proper tool for the job though. Mine has a seperate resevoir / pump.

I have a 12ton bottle jack with a plate welded on the top. seldom used but valued tool
