Ms201 impact driver disaster!

Today I decided to change the needle bearing on my MS201. It turns out I tried to impact drive the clutch the wrong way and snapped the key on the fly wheel! 😢

 

Does anyone have a spare flywheel they want to sell?

To get the clutch undone to get to the needle bearing? I think that was his primary objective.

Well that isn't too clever - you should use rope down the plug hole on these small spark plug machines or the small piston stop tool from Stihl.

 

As you have found, the thread is left handed on the clutch and an impact driver IS NOT needed!

 

The flywheel........ it is possible to put the flywheel back in to place with a slight smear of grinding paste and then really locking it in place. You will need a fair bit of care in doing this so you achieve the correct ignition advance, comparing to another machine and checking with a degree wheel will tell you if the job is spot on or not.

 

If you get the incorrect flywheel position, it can destroy the engine through pre-ignition. Anything more than an extra 5 degrees will be approaching the danger zone!

That must have been a sharp/sudden realisation, that what had thought to have been a good idea a minute before. Was in fact a karma killer. Good luck with the saw and if in future trouble, there's always Spud or the local dealer.

So what happened? You used an impact wrench on the clutch, and the shock broke the key on the flywheel on the other side of the engine? Were you holding the flywheel still?

He said he turned or attempted to turn it the wrong way.

He probably had wedged something in to hold the flywheel and the impact on the clutch spun the flywheel enough to break the key.

 

I have noticed many saws don't have the flywheel on particularly tight:thumbdown:

I had success with this scenario on a couple of hedgetrimmers following Spud's advice.It's the nut doing the holding work, the key is for the timing.
