YouTube, music and copyright - how do you do yours?

Ok so I am looking at increasing the number of videos this coming year with getting a gopro etc. Most videos are 100% better with music and the royalty free music on offer by youtube themselves is frankly, naff.

How do you source, attach music to, and work around the copyright issues with music on YouTube?

 

Looking into it there are huge areas of greyness and different countries have different laws. There are fair usage laws (funny cat video with music playing i the back ground etc) but even these contradict themselves given recent payouts in courts in various cases. Plus also apparently the Youtube FAQ's even have contradictions as nobody seems to know the answer??

 

In the UK, there was a deal done between PRS and Youtube but this doesn't cover all artists.

 

What video processing software do you use and where do you source your music and display it in a copyright 'friendly' way?

 

Or do most people just wing it?

Ha, wrong Kevin I think! It's actually Kevin Macleod, Royalty Free Music. Also, not sure if it's still completely free, there seem to be some payment options now.

Think I've mentioned Brad Sucks on here before. They're a band and their music is copyright-free.

Premium beat.com is another one.

You can use most

copyright mainstream music and it will be restricted by YouTube as per owner stipulation. But if push came to shove, you should know that it is illegal to use copyright music without permission.

End of story. I have tried nearly everything. Some bands like Led Zeppelin. The vid will be completely blocked in every way.

Stick to arranging royalty-free music wherever you can find it and then if it goes viral at least you can keep the proceeds.

The rules are simple, copyright music is not OK to use legally. . .Playing in the background or wired right into the foreground, it's illegal. Changing the speed or pitch of it, illegal, and also lame.
