How to sort roundwood?

I grade wagon loads as they arrive with pallet tines takes me about a hr and half. With tractor loader. Only stuff thats a pain is the smaller 4 way head stuff tends to go all over got a beak to fit to tines for this year.

Is sorting it with a digger not just adding another "handle" into the process? Ie still needs another machine to come and take it to the log deck

 

I can set up the log deck close to the stack but don't think our scale of business can justify any 360.

 

Think I will just keep things as they are and look out for a small forwarding trailer and crane. Will try bribing the next driver with tea and cake.

We had couple of drivers who we used to give fiver/tenner... Log deck loaded, processor size next to it, oversize stacked separately. Everyone was happy and only took them an extra few minutes

Put a 8 way axe head in and carry on, don't see the problem

3pl cranes do work well if they are set up on arms right, but not the same as roof mounted. I bought a 3pl crane 2 years ago best investment I have made as now have made a trailer it fits on.

The way I see it is if you got 4 way in one pile 6 in another 8 in another all the nices 15 16 inch to go through the 12 way over size then the bendy stack it makes the whole process Easyer.

Trying to be a bit more organised and sorting my timber to the processor. ATM it's forks on the compact tractor to load the log deck where any oversized stuff gets ringed up and moved out the way. Would be really nice to be able to pic through the stack for size and species but a nightmare job with just the forks. Would love a small forwarding crane but all I have read says they are pretty much useless on the 3 point linkage so needs a trailer so pricy.

 

Are there any alternative/cheap ways that I have missed?

 

Would think a 3 point crane would need a good size tractor would you want to keep taking of the crane to use the tractor on the processor or have you got 2 tractors.Same with a forwarding trailer do you keep changing the tractor over.

How much would a 360 with a grab and rotator be and could you justify it for sorting and loading the log deck,the one in the photo some one has put up looks like a lot of money.I don t think there are any cheap solutions just a question of finding what you can afford and works for your operation.

My solution is tractor with pto processor fulwood splitta run off the hydraulics and use the lorry with log crane to collect sort stack and load the log deck.

i found putting a cheap finger grab on mini digger for sorting and helping at log deck speeded up process immensely. then we always were taking out to help extract and load timber. found more jobs for digger that we would not bother with before so helps pay for itself in no time. That was three years ago now got a 5 tonner as well with selector finger grab which seems to be working most days.
