random question but how much quicker will logs dry in a polytunnel environment? i.e. is a polytunnel a worthy investment if you can get you logs to market quicker than normally seasoned ones

I have an 8 metre square tunnel sides in mesh, speed at which wood dries is amazing.

 

I s there an easy way to post pics or do I need to take them into photo bucket first. I will try and put a pic on.

Next door to me is an old nursery and I rent the polytunnels from there. They work out at £80-00 a month for each span so that's pretty much £1,000-00 for the year. You can get 250 bags into each, double stacked and all on pallets. On average I sell each bag for £50-00 so that's £12,500-00.... so basically well worth it to guarantee dry wood.

 

I split the wood as soon as it is on the ground, back it and load into the polytunnel. The heat in there is unreal - it goes up to 40 degrees C on a hot day! The doors are left open so the breeze comes through. I reckon split bagged wood in there dries in 6 months or even less if over the summer.

 

There's plenty of empty nurseries around out there so you could look to rent the polytunnels or maybe try and buy them second hand and get them re set up on your own land - prob pick them up pretty cheap. Buy the frame and get them re polythened (cost about £1,000-00 to get re polythened professionally). The polythene lasts 5 years on them. New I don't know how much they are...

gensetsteve - what do you class as amazing? looks a nice setup by the way not your everyday gardeners polytunnel is it

Its hard to quantify amazing but my beech is cut for one year then split and stacked for 6 months in there. Never had complaints about wet wood.

 

I remember when I bought it it was Sunday and raining and some strongbow and ebay was involved. Not alot of strongbow but enough to win at the maiden bid of £500. If the measurements were in feet and not metric I would have realised what I was dealing with.

 

It was a long story so I will cut it short for now. Tunnel is great covers are about £100 and from experience last 8 - 10 years.

 

Its made by a company in sussex I think called polybuild about 2k new very helpful people ( especially since I bought a heap of bits off ebay )
