Could have sworn it was a young sweet Chestnut but to be honest I was concentrating more on the strange disease/rot it seemed to be riddled with?

Any ideas anyone?

Looks like a young sweet chestnut to me (I've got a hundred that look like this).

The corky areas make me wonder if it has had something tied around it and the bark has grown over it. Was there any evidence of a washing line/ kids swing etc? Don't normally see cankers on SC.

"The corky areas make me wonder if it has had something tied around it and the bark has grown over it." yes or Could that be the tree's reaction to some other damage? Squirrel?

Have a closer look and take a tap next time you pass by. Interesting growth; I've seen the like on other species but no SC here.

In picture 2, the stem/limb in the top left of the picture definitely looks like Sweet Chestnut. :001_smile:

There will still be prickly husks around on the ground surely . Looks like one to me as well . Just an edge tree not a coppice .
