Looking for work in North Devon

Hi all,

I did have this in the employment section but I was advised by another member that nobody can reply to it where it was so I'm reposting it here..

I am right at the very start of my journey in arboriculture. I have been working in forestry for a while as a labourer and I never realised that I would love it so much, as my boss told me 'The sawdust gets into your veins!'. I have always loved trees in a big way and it has made me realise that this is the direction I need to be heading. I am happy to continue for a while in forestry but really I want to be a tree surgeon in the long run.

So, I'm looking for somebody to take me on as a groundie/labourer and help me gain the relevant knowledge, skills and experience to work my way upward, with the aim to be a climber one day. I am booked in to do my CS30/31 but otherwise have no qualifications yet, I do hold a full uk drivers license.

I am keen and a very hard worker.

Google search for tree surgeons "in the area you want to work" and ring around them, most will probably offer a couple of days trial to see how you operate within the team, that's how I started.

As you have already booked yourself onto CS30/31, that will show a good commitment to the industry for any future employer.

Best of luck.

I would like to take the opportunity here too to reach out to members and ask for any advice you could give somebody like me in my current position. It would be very much appreciated.

My take from my experience . Forestry is my love but the pay is pants and its hard graft . Tree surgery is ok and the pay eventually is better . :001_smile: Hope you get a break and good luck matey . You liik like a decent sort !

Same here but sitting in an office pressing buttons and answering the 'phone is same pay, no graft and best of all no expenses.

I lived in Braunton a good few years back and had to move away to get a decent wage as pay even in line clearance was crap! When I first started the best you could get was £30 a day where as in Bristol or Gloucester it was £75 a day! Even working for yourself it was a struggle as there's always someone cheaper as they have zero overheads, farmers sons got a saw and tractor n trailer!!

Consider getting a bike or camper and commuting to get a sensible/living wage with prospects, harsh but unfortunately a reality if you want to live in one of the best places in the country!!!!
