I want to use it, as I am fed up with post rotting off at ground level in 5 years

same here. I've started buying my posts a year I advance, letting them dry out then soaking them in a heady mix of creosote and waste oil. I've found that if the posts are really dry then they can soak up nearly a litre of potion.

why cant you pressure treat with it? there are specialist suppliers in the north with supposedly genuine products

Graham - I meant as a local treatment, compared to purchase of ready PT stock.

The suggestion of long term soaking might be the best for small jobs - even if it is just a dozen posts at a time left in a bin of the stuff for a week or so. Not sure what this would to green cut 'straight' posts though!

Yes I have a couple of packs of stakes which have been in the shed for a year or so. Do you mix 50/50?

How long have you been doing it for?

Been doing it for the last 2/3 years, so its too early to tell how much longer the stakes last. I haven't measured it but 50/ 50 won't be too far off. An old kid told me that if you can heat it, it will penetrate much further. But I think pointing a space heater at the 45 gallon drum I'm using will be something of a fire risk.

Warm the stakes up to open the grain before you immerse them perhaps ?
