You can register yourself self employed with a phone call / 10 mins on tinterweb:

Paying for someone to do it for you, unless there are some serious complications, seems really excessive as do the fee you've been quoted!

 

Shop around a bit fella, sounds like you could save yourself an MS 661 (ex VaT)!!

I've just paid £460+ for my accountant to do my tax return for the business and some rental property. I input all my invoices onto a accounting program and let him file my return.

i pay £300 a year,i do all my own spreadsheets and send them in for him to check and do tax return.

Basically as everyone is saying shop around, I just got my bill today £160 but I do very little apart from sortout all recites. But mine is semi retired.
