Anyone experienced can go out and sub for small firms, do a great job, no questions asked, get paid at the end of the day, but when going on larger contracts, or rail/powerlines, thats when the tickets come into play. 30/31/38/39/40/41 will be what you require to CONTRACT to FIRMS.

 

(I would stay in Barbados though mate, Uk SUCKS )

How does one go about attaining the necessary credentials to carry out tree work in the UK, what are the requirements. Coming from seven years climbing experience doing technical removals and pruning work ( without spikes of coarse ). In Barbados we do not have any governing body. I have my own small tree company there. Wife is English, just got a good teaching position and we are moving to the UK. I don't want to sit around dreaming of working that is for sure.

One option is for you to joint the ever expanding UK 'redneck' tree lopping fraternity....

If you want to do the job in a professional manner, you are going to need to collect a few bits of paper.

 

The UK chainsaw competence system consists of training, and then assessment.

 

Anyone can supply you training (within reason)- the biggest player in the UK is 'Lantra', but the assessment can either be undertaken by 'city and guilds' or 'Lantra'.

 

Between the two organisations, the assessments are identical and interchangeable (you can do some with Lantra, and interchange with city and guilds, but most people use city and guilds for historical reasons..... shop around, get the best price).

 

Once, the assessments had nice easy names like CS30 CS31, CS38 and CS39, but they have now given them stupid long names and indecipherable long numbers, sorry)

 

For basic tree work you will need:

 

Chainsaw maintenance and cross cutting (was CS30)

Yerr course i am, i just get a little frustrated sometimes. It is a very skillful job that we all do and you never stop learning, but it is a shame that Arboriculture is an industry that can so easily be exploited by those people who have little regard for trees, the law, taxes and the people they peddle money off. Good luck in your return to the UK, I think you will see a big change for the worse from when you were last here. Besides the poor standard of work set by those folk topping trees and tarmacing drives, the crime rate has reached a record high, in the last few weeks break ins both houses next to me, and on a number of other farms close by, police know who it is and the site is only a few miles away, i have seen his facebook and he also trades in tree topping , fencing , chainsaws and anything else he can lay his hands on. Guys it's all cool...I don't really want to leave Barbados per say...it's just things are hard here and opportunities have presented themselves in the UK...the decision will be made this week....no way do I want to trade my tropical paradise for the cold ( I was born in Canada and have spent many years there so I know cold )...but I have a family to support with two small children, as a father I have to do the right thing for them...I am tough and a hard worker who has built a pretty good tree service over here but I can see how things are going in this island and want to make a move before I regret it...I can always come back if things don't work out...I don't want to live in regret....thanks for the help, now I have an idea of what I need to acquire to get myself going....the climbing and rigging is not a problem for me...I am well skilled at treework with good practices ( can always learn more for sure, don't want to come off arrogant here ) and I am sure would be a good asset to some small legit company ( my preference ).....Silky ( Paul ), yeah my father in law lives in Newcastle so I will surely pay you a visit in Durham....
