looking for tips on where to stay and what to see

If you get chance try to get to the theatre royal panto, its unlike any other. and castle howard is worth a visit.

the walls around the old city are a nice walk and there are some cracking old pubs on micklegate. if you like mountain biking then you can hire them to go round dalby forest which isn't too far. i'll post more suggestions when I've had a think

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway's usually quite popular - it sets off from Pickering, which is only 20 miles or so from York, and goes through where they filmed Heartbeat.

 

Eating wise, Cosmo in York city centre is pretty good. It's one of those all you can eat buffet places but has just about every type of food you can think of - Can't be many places where can you pile chinese and indian on top of a roast dinner :thumbup1:

argos moved out of there because of the rat problem:laugh1:
