Thanks for posting the pics on an ongoing basis MD, much appreciated.

You are welcome.

An older photo of Elk, taken from Hy. 101 where Redwood National Park touches the tiny village of Orick. Some people asked if there is snow, but its sunlight reflecting off the rock. Used an older camera for this one.

A retired redwood guide once wrote that my site's redwood pages were "by far and away the best redwood" resource. You ever check my signature link?

If I don't write about something, I link to the best sites. But I have one page that addresses your question partly. There are well over a hundred pages in the menu.

The page I had in mind was not in the menu, but I just added it a moment ago. Go to > Essentials > Travel > Travel Cost

Not sure what it costs to fly over over the ocean. But once that's done, its fairly inexpensive to experience a one week trip if someone doesn't need to live like royalty.

We flew from NZ so no idea to come in from the UK Mario. It was part of a US wide trip and we drove down from Seattle. I'd advise anybody to do that drive down the coast, of course giving plenty of time to explore the Redwoods. Stunning and, in my humble opinion, far better than the Big Sur coastline. We paid on average around $150 per night for some really good hotels. There were far cheaper available but just had the opportunity to do the trip in style so we did. Food was plenty cheap and I'll be doing the trip again one day but over a longer period of time.

November 1st, I met a man from South Africa, to explore a bit in Redwood National Park. He chose the new motel in Klamath. Its in the $150 per night range. Holiday Inn Express

The place is new. Not sure if it was open for business when you passed through.

Normally I don't like to stay in Klamath because the village is too quiet for me in regards to available stores and restaurants. But if I was going to stay there, that Holiday Inn would get me to reconsider. It has in-house dining too.

We stayed in Brookings, right on the beach in a Best Western and then a couple of nights in Arcata I think it was. Probably not the closest places to the Redwoods but plenty suitable for out needs and very reasonably priced for the quality of the hotels. The entire trip from Seattle to SF was outstanding and one of the finest drives I've done. Dropped into Eureka for a feed when we stopped at Arcata and found it to be quite a quaint little place. Lots of homeless but mostly harmless and minding themselves. Also found the locals at the restaurant to be a thoroughly friendly lot. Anyone doing the drive; I can highly recommend the Shearwater inn, Newport. Best nights sleep I had in the entire 5 and 1/2 week trip. Much further north mind.

We stayed a night in Klamath in the Ravenwood motel. OK motel - sub$100 a night and one of the few motels that we stayed where you got breakfast.

The best bit was the bar over the road, full of locals and this big old saw hanging from the ceiling.

The bar owner is "Little Jerry" or "Little Jer" ... and he used to work with "Big Ger" aka Gerald Beranek.

I recall the Ravenwood being where the Beraneks overnight when they stay in Klamath.

  • 3 weeks later...

Took a young colleague out to see a Redwood in Taupo recently. Measured at around 100 feet with a half decent girth. He marvelled at the sheer size.........then I showed him the photos I took in the forests over there and his jaw dropped. I still have very fond memories of lying on my back looking up through the trees and just being overwhelmed by the immensity of them.
