Hedge trimming...advice please.

Do you tie anything to the top of the ladder? I find a six foot length of 3x2 at the top helps it not to sink into the hedge leaving big holes

 

Na usually the ladders sit firmly into the hedge it's an awkward way to do it but it's very rare that I trim hedges that big maybe 1 or 2 a year usually a set of 2.5m steps and a combi unto with an extension do it, plus I hate trimming so I try my best to avoid it

It also seems like every trimming job I do like shrubs etc get turned into a ball anyone else do the same??

I believe you could use an Easy-Lift Harness. In conjunction with some of the scaffold mentioned you would find the investment well made for the present and future.

I really like the idea of the Easy Lift Harness. Unfortunately though most of my hedges are above eye level, and so I can't see the top to get a good enough quality cut from the ground. So for me the fact that it can't be used from on steps makes it a real no no. It's a shame because it's cutting the top with a long reach cutter that it would be the most benefit.

I nail or screw a length of plywood to my wooden ladders, works quite well.

For the most part we use our tripod ladder and the 1m extension bar.

 

No guide for level personally as we have the eye but don't afraid to use one if it helps you.

 

If its the first year its been cut, or first time for a while, then it will look a bit gnarly but given regular trimming it will come good again.

I love trimming hedges with the use of a mewp, so much quicker and you get a much better finish. If the job justifies it, i would use one.

 

Just be careful there kentjames with those 11kv lines, very easy to make a mistake with mewp and long hedge cutter. Keep them in mind all the time. Stay safe bud.
