far less i would say. we deliberately use the tip (but with a carving bar the kickback zone is less and the effect is reduced) BUt.. its deliberate so a kick is expected. we are also payign far more attention to exactly where the chain/tip is all teh time to avoid making an overcut that would ruin the piece. this is form somebody who also does forestry/logging and so i see both sides of it. we are also predominantly working in a controlled environment, unlike in the middle of the woods

thats not to say that there are no risks, BUT its all about risk management, experience, and (usually) a gradual increase in difficulty with experience

chainsaw carving i reckon is dead safe i reckon compared to climbing/dismantling or felling. what dervish said about the tip of the bar is right. i find there is virtually no kickback on carving bars. your on even ground and and long as you don't get too relaxed about you'll be fine. the closest shaves i have had are ususally just moving reet big lumps of oak with telehandlers etc.

Thanks for the comments guys.the golfer bear is for to a local golf corse and is being put by the club house and the owl was my first ever stump carving designed by the customer. The herons my second stump carving done for prestbury parish council.i should have more pics of sum of the events I done this year but sadly my phone broke and lost all my pics : (
