Make him do all his bucking (on he ground ) cutting only 2 thirds through max Then make him roll the log . Maybe he will see that little bit of extra effort saves a lot of time in the long run making dust with a dull chain .

should be doing this unless it's off the ground anyway

 

plus the fact he doesn't sharpen suggests he has no quals so i blame the teacher for how he uses the saws if he has the quals he needs sacking for not sharpening and misusing saws

it's pretty basic for what we all do but people do make basic mistakes from time to time but if it is all the time ........ why would you have high hopes for him he sounds like a muppet

Because in many others aspects he excels.

 

Nobody is perfect, I doubt many people who have recently passed their CS whatever can REALLY sharpen a saw.

Before I was aloud near a saw my old boy spent ages talking/showing me how to sharpen it and that the chain has only th touch wood, and when I did get going and do anything untoward he would just stare at me

I've had similar issues in the past and cured it with a good calm chat and teaching the person to sharpen a saw properly. Since then he is superb

 

If they still don't get it, give them a silky.

I think your first job tomorrow should be a sharpening lesson, give him a saw then keeping it sharp is his responsibility. Practice makes perfect as the saying goes. Sounds like he will get plenty of practice.

If you're spending a good portion of the day sharpening. Why not take him aside while you're doing so and teach him how it's done? He'll have to learn at some point. Better now than letting it drag on. Explain why it's done the way it is and also explain, that if the chain becomes blunt, be it a magical occurrence or simply that it does. Then he will be expected to either carry on with the blunted chain or sharpen it.

He's actually very engineery, fixes stuff I can't.

 

He'll pick up the theory quick enough.
