I recently had a dead Horse Chestnut taken down and prepared to split it for firewood. Unfortunately I discovered that most of the main trunk is completely waterlogged. Became waterlogged while still standing - not after being cut down. It separates easily in ring segments.

Question is - what quality firewood will result when this wood is given time to dry? If it's not going to burn well when dry, I'd rather throw it away and keep the drying space for high quality wood.

Waterlogged wood in my experience dries very light and hence has little energy. The stuff I've come across is because of rot and the fungus has used most of the energy in the wood. If you need it it must be dried in single stacks so as not to pass water to other logs.

It'll not be worth the effort. It will burn so-so in a wood burner, but is a bitch to split and takes up a lot of space for little calorific value. Goes light as willow when dry.
