Wood burning from the top down ...

Well I've had an outdoor fire of leylandii today. It's very green. It was lit with little wind and I've had to stir the bottom on to the top to burn it.

Therefore my thesis is it depends on lots of factors and having the time to research it.

 

Glad the knees ok. I was thinking you were fed up convalescing.

 

The other week I was thinking if you had a model train set, to be truly accurate would you scale time back by the same ratio as the scale size???!!!!

Then my mind got better stuff to do so never did work it out!

Hi the flames that you can see rolling above the logs is called the secondary burn ,its the gas from the log first burn re- igniting and burning again.

 

Yea woody , that's what I thought / said in my post but the actual consumption of the log appears to be from beneath

A quick google threw up lots of results this one being very clear A non-commercial service in support of responsible home heating with wood - Top-Down Fires Step-by-Step

 

Read about this before and tried it with little success. Tiny peice of fire lighter with some branch loggings or processor waste on top is how I get ours going.

Well that's pretty much the opposite of what I and presumably most other people do . After 10 minutes I get the same result as him . Interesting though might try it

Not sure how well this shows it but the top of this logs burning before the underside, think it's just the flames rolling round making it

Think that is the gas burning off or secondary burn as its called . Get the tongs and pull a log out and see if its burnt top or bottem !

I reckon looking at those pictures and thinking back to bunsen burners at school the flame does not start at the immediate combustion point. The colour kicks in a little higher.
