I HAVE an X27, it's terrific.

My confusion was how something lighter and with a much thinner head THAN IT, ..........................could be as good!

Ahh, I see!

Surely something lighter with a thinner head than x27 is a hatchet:-)

I've been doing logs part time for about 5 years with an axe. This year I bought a log splitter put rarely use it because the axe is so much quicker. Now have a Riko 10 ton splitting force tow behind if anyone is interested.

Hi Marc better off with your splitter if your doing large butts mate thanks Jon

I'm confused now, the Fiskars has the "big fat wedge" which you refer to and is what I assumed made it so effective at actually spitting the wood. Also, if the wood doesn't split at least the thicker taper means it hasn't buried itself in as far and therefore comes out much easier.

As for the weight, again surely you need the heavier head to generate more force to split the wood. A wee thin light head sounds more like something that would slice rather than split. :confused1:

I find the narrow taper is usually narrower than the split as it drives the grain apart. Now you mention it I do find that it gets stuck very infrequently.

Plus I can throw a 1.5kg axe around all day, getting a big swing when required. 3 or 4kg axes are designed to be lifted and dropped rather than swung (in theory). Swinging a big one all day (ooo err) would be exhausting.

Each to their own though.
