Fungi on ash tree

I'd go for Meripilus giganteus.

 

It's got gills, not pores. Can't be Meripilus.

At the end of the day i think its a contender for a fell, single access track for X 2 houses and a public foot path near by

 

If the fungus is parasitic - with all those clusters around the trunk it would be likely to have evidence of decay if not advanced decay

 

surely it would be worth doing a little excavation around the base of the trunk and main anchor roots, and test bore into the base of the trunk would be better than felling it.

I thought I spied a hint of white spore on top of a cap, could just as easily be mouldy though!

Did they have an odour? In my experience with P squarossa it has a very distinctive smell, kind of like peppery garlic...

Customers would like to keep the tree but i think it should be removed. Too much risk on single track.road with public foot path.

 

Even if heavily reduced its a hell of a stem to fall over if it did!

If its heavily reduced why will it fall over?

 

Its still standing now and was not felled by the high winds, so I would have thought a reduction would make it safe.

Even if heavily reduced it would be at least a 6t stem if it gave way, also it would look awful
