Only stihl and husky have followed the legislation, not law, that top handles can only be sold to properly trained people. Anyone can buy any of the the other brands as I proved when I got offered a job whilst in Lincolnshire in March whilst there without a topper went to local farmers engineering type store and bought a terrible top handle for 150 no questions asked. I did say do you want to see my ticket response "no mate this is not a stihl and can be sold to anyone" I then had a read and actually anybody can buy anything only legislation suggests you shouldn't be allowed which the bug two have signed up to knowing they can and maintain sales.

My pennorth, I await correction...donning helmet now

only stihl and husky follow the guidance on terms of sale agreed with the hse in the uk as they have the most to lose and under the brightest spotlight to check compliance.

the dealer is wrong in selling the other brands to all and sundry just because its not one stihl/husky, the agreement applies to all brands. simples.

the hse guidance also states that the price of the product should be significantly higher than that of a domestic, back handle saw to discourage purchase by general public thinking "oooh thats a handy little chainsaw" 😃😃

Therefore the price of a TH saw should never really be below the £400 point but many of the chinese saws are sub £200 flouting the hse agreement.

obviously none of the above applies to 2nd hand sales but many sellers on ebay for example of TH saws, will make a token comment suggesting suitable for pro use only etc...

... but the advantage is making it hard for cowboys to get hold of gear and stoping rough work

I'm sure they'll know someone who'll flog them a recently liberated piece of gear for a knockdown price, no questions asked. Though I accept that Stihl can't do much about liberation.
