FFS i was paying a lad with no tickets or no clue either! £80 per day minimum, sometimes £100 per day. i now use a different guy who is excellent and i always try and pay him £100 plus per day, if i have a good day and i can afford a bit extra then it's £120 or more if i can. Can't believe how tight fisted some people are when it comes to pay.

In many cases, if you're not satisfied with your pay and conditions, do something about it, move on or ask for more pay. You must also take into consideration what else you do get as well as pay. Supplied ppe, regular training updates and so forth all make for a better package. Likewise, what you offer them for your money should be taken into account, are you a good team player, it's 4pm and there's two hours work left do you offer to stay and finish or do you have to get to the bank etc? I spoke to a friend yesterday who is struggling to get minimum wage, he's gradually being replaced with cheaper migrant and student labour, but he is a very difficult character, if he feels "put out" he works to rule, or even refuses to turn out for work, hardly helps himself IMO.

There are many sides to earning money, and how much is the right amount, everything else is regulated, tested and logged down in reams of paperwork, yet pay seems to be a repetitive issue on here.

I think on a self employed basis if a person is just a brash dragger then 60.00 a day, if they can use a saw and are ok then 75-80 a day, if they are efficient and crack on to move the day on 90-100 a day

Trying to find good lads to work for you is hard work! and to get them to work hard, rain doesnt hurt but if you mope around instead of cracking on the job actually takes longer ;)

I remember when i started out, sure i was on 60 a day, then 70 then 80 then 80 for climbing then 100 etc and gone on from then.

The thing is i wanted to do it, and took the pay but learnt a lot, but i was also rewarded by pay rises, i like to think i did well when learning and i did learn from someone whom is very good and very efficient!

I think some workers need to up there game and they will be paid accordingly, this is not directed at the original poster or anyone, just a generalisation.

Clean up well, fuel saws up, have things ready for climbers and look and listen all the time. Also is the finished product, tree, garden etc how you would leave if it was your job? also keep tools tidy etc not just thrown in the van, you'll appreciate it when you buy them :001_smile:

I agree. I sub doing gardening work and get £12.50 per hour. I'm self employed, basic chainsaw ticket. If I work my petrol tools, my van or my chipper for him he pays a small hire fee - £5-10 per day for cheaper kit and a tenner per running hour on the chipper (including fuel). The van comes at 50p per mile, but it's usually working hard when it is used.

I've been thinking I'd like to put and extra quid an hour on that rate - been on it for three years now.:confused1:

Edit... Reading that back it sounds like I'm saying he's tight. I'm not, I think it's a fair deal. Unlike the poor fella who started the topic! Any hard working low skill bloke has to be worth at least £75 per day, and he sounds better than that.
