Groundman pay

I am 1 of 2 groundmen working for a small tree gang. The other (more experienced) guy has just left saying that the boss was taking the mick with pay. I can see where he is coming from regarding a lot of physical and dangerous work. I do not have any tickets, he had 30/31. I don't want to fork out on my tickets if I going to feel the same way as him in a couple years time. What sort of hourly/daily rate are other groundmen on/what do you pay your groundmen? Thanks.

Not having tickets is going to seriously affect your earning ability, as well as lack of experience. Many people feel they're entitled to far more than they're worth to a company. A small business does not have a bottomless pit of money to dish out to its staff. What age are you? look up the minimum wage for your age and that shouldn't be far out. Go get your tickets, plus some more, and some experience, then you'll start making the company money and be worth more.

Totally agree with you about limited earning ability with no tickets. I'm just grateful to have reasonably steady work at the moment. I'm on a £45 day rate (which I have to say works out less than minimum wage some days, I'm 26). But my feeling is that if I didn't do it, there would be plenty of other people wiling to. And I enjoy it. Obviously when work dries up/weather writes off days, I feel pretty skint. Do you think 45 is a bit low for someone with tickets? Also I forgot to say, we are both working for him on a self-employed basis.
