Alec thank u for this, spot on info. Poplar seems to be a hugely under rated timber. We've actually got a fairly basic mobile mill, never thought it would come out for some poplar but I'm going to rip a couple up the middle and see.

I have been burning some 18 month seasoned pop on the wood burner tonight and it burns with a nice bright flame from start to finish and leaves more of a bottom in the stove than the pine we have. Cant see it burning any quicker than the beech we have so far impressed. I found its best to get it done with pop and not leave it hanging around for a couple of years.

It makes really nice cheap 'softwood' cladding, with none of the resin issues. We sent some for pressure treating and the firm who do the treatment were very impressed with how thoroughly it impregnated.

 

Nails and paints beautifully and very stable, we milled some 16 to 18in wide waney cladding from Pop and it was very well behaved.

I burn pop in my stove and it does the job fine . I don't think it burns fast really Its one of the reasons the make matches from it , coz it burns slow . The wax on the match gets it going .

Estate we're about to start felling on has dozens of perfect 3ft diameter clean 100ft trees - at least 50ft of branch free stem on each one. Need to find a use for them as they want them gone!
