If you fit the large spline sprocket to the 550 you would have to change the oil pump drive gear as this is driven off the back of the spline, so the opening in the gear has to be larger.

that was my immediate thought but it appears to fit perfectly!

Yes, 9 tooth only fits the larger drums, add 2 links to the chain. Chain speed is 27m/s. It's the set up on my 560!

Although 8t 3/8 is faster (29m/s).

Changing the rim isn't a magic way of getting faster cut speed. It will make a big saw on a small bar cut faster but may well make a saw on its usual bar size very boggy in the cut and cause over fuelling issues on tuned/auto tune saws by not allowing the saw to get in to it's powerband.

What pitch did you use on 3/8" chain in those maths?

 

 

Also, the speed at WOT out of wood will of course be much higher, and in the wood it will vary over a wide range, so it is just theory to calculate at a set rpm. I'm sure you know this, but someone that doesn't may read the posts here.

So far in all experimentation I've done with gearing up a saw I've found myself going back to using the standard set up ie. going for torque over increased chain speed....

 

 

But that's me personally - it's one of those if it works for you then fair enough!

The splines are on the clutch drum, not on the crankshaft.

quick update fella's,used again today on completely different terms,smashing up a large cherry tree,13" powermatch bar,buried in 10" limbs,it flew through it,very surprised and it'll be staying on

I've only ever seen 9 tooth 325 sprockets used for milling.
