390xp vs 395xp

I run a 36" on my 395 and it pulled it through a 4-5ft diameter dead beech which had been standing dead for 20 years and was as hard as glass, well impressed how it coped all day long.

Never tried the 390 so no comparence unfortunately,

Another vote for the husky 576xp too, I loved mine until I stupidly went and sold it. But its not in the same league as 395 of course.

I reckon 395 will serve most people in this country as their 'big' saw. Not many folks are dealing with 4ft dia trees day in day out and the added weight of a 880/3120 just makes them hard work for what could mostly be done with a 395 anyway.

I've run both, I was disappointed the 394/395 didn't have noticeably more power than my 385 when they were both stock, I've ported both, both run stronger, but the 385/390 wins it for me, it's much stronger ported. The saving grace of the 394/395 is torque, but even that is no match for the big old Stihls, from the 051 up.

Agreed . I am lucky enough to have 390 , 395, and 3120 . On big ugly lumps I would go for the 395

Another vote for the 576 here, a bit of a animal!

Are you using the autotune version? Only asking as I'm running a standard 576 and it's coming up for 3 years old, so thinking ahead for replacement. It's my in-between saw, from 550, 576, 880.

Far from disappointed with the 395 and found it to be the opposite of what you described there against a 390 eddy, I would happily pick it up over the 880 if both are running 36's ... Apart from they don't make 0 series stihls any more for our market Who in there right mind would want to work with one or any old saw all day... No thanks!

Mines an autotune 2012 model. I've had it from new. It's a great saw and I've had no problems at all to date. The only thing the autotune doesn't like is ripping, it'll die straight out the cut, then need re setting in a log to run right again.

Never figured that one out dan until you just made it obvious :)

Have you tried milling with one?

I've milled posts out of boards, so only 8" cuts max. It'll do it if you're careful with the throttle but I'm sure it doesn't like doing it.

Most ripping it's done has been breaking down rings into halves or quarters.
