Certainly early K series ( petrol ) had a head gasket weakness. There was a modifoed head gasket fitted later and presumably that applies to the freelander. Not sure of the exact date but circa 03 I guess. Alternator bearings were very weak again certainly on the early ones.

K series engines are good once the gaskets are done😎 I've done loads of them, it's all the other crap they bolt to them that let them down!

I had one as a GreenMech tow tug. Did about 140k miles in three years and I found it pleasant enough company. Main dealer parts and servicing was ruinous! Had the TD4 BMW unit and would have another too.
