If in any doubt you should always do an explority dig around stump first or get the area cat scaned to find out if there are any utilities near the stump.

it is so hard though mate, i think a lot of cable laying and pipe laying is done on friday afternoons. not always as deep as they should be, or where they say they are. i worked with a guy in IBM, doing tracks. he ad a fancy gizmo for detecting stuff, it gave the all clear. dig dig, ooops there goes the main fibre optics feed to the whole of IBM in scotland. they also flooded the whole of manufacturing by breaking the main water main aswell:ohmy:

We did a job 2 weeks ago for a landscape gardner and he used water dowsing rods to find underground cables...i know you all might scoff at it as weird or new age bull...but it worked for him and i have done it in the past too.

i watched a documentry on how it works, it isnt hocus pocus, its electrical waves picked up through the soles of your feet, they run through your body, and if your arms and wrists are at the right angle it will make them move slightly, and if you are holding rods then you can see them turn.:001_smile:

When pricing up you/we should always look out for overhead cables anyway phones lines etc, if you cant id the cable 100% knowing that it is definitely NOT electric then get further assistance.

This seems to be the underlying problem, is it coz times are tight that this is not happening? Is it idleness? If people were trained from the beginning in how to id hazards, this topic would be proven unnecessary. Hours of time are spent on filling in R/As and method statements, yet these are totally pointless if you cant even recognise the hazards of a site.
