I'm clearing rhodedendrum ponticum out of a large area over this coming winter. It'll be slash and burn and I'm after a lightweight saw recommendation to get in amongst them. There's nothing over 5 inch diameter.

Thanks,

Dave

Rhodi can be very hard. I would still be using a 50c saw for the reach with a 16-20" bar. The last rhodi I cleared was left sit for 40 years or so and was up to a foot thick in most parts. I used a ported 365 then.

The light grained trunk you see in all that, uh...lyme(?) - that's rhodi, and in the background you have a stack of rhodi there which was typical at that site.

If you can find a good secondhand one, a 242xp takes some beating for any sort of scrub clearing - very light but a proper screamer of a saw and fairly economical.

The nearest modern equivalent would be something like a 550 but, with mine anyway, you'd be filling it up every 20 minutes or so if you were going for it.

In keeping with the ms211, the husky 135/140 is another option. Fit either the Stihl or husky with a picco super chain and it'll eat the wood!
