I'd personally be annoyed by the shots that missed and damaged the tree.

 

Yeah... try and avoid pole snips where possible, I did a fair bit of cone picking over the past few years and it just takes time, especially when you aren't used to it.

If you tie a prussik loop onto your hooky pole you can pull branches into you and then clip it off to the stem/branches/etc. leaving your hands free to grab cones, useful.

The trees are tpo'd so no felling and I've told him it would be an annual event which he's ok about. They look fairly well maintained in regards to the dead wood. One of those jobs that I'm really not looking forward to!!

Perhaps a 'hidden' net in the bottom of the canopy could catch them. You could then go back once every few years to just clear the cones and detritus from the net/tarp.
